About BackyardQuail.com

Welcome to backyard quail.  I decided to raise a few coturnix quail in my back yard and this site is the journey.  I decided on quail because city ordinances did not allow me to have chickens.

  1. When do Georgia Giants Bobwhite Start laying eggs? They are 12 weeks old and I have not heard the famous nonwhite that he makes.

    1. While I don’t personally raise bob white due to state regulations, my understanding is the Georgia Giants mature at 22 weeks.

  2. I saw Aussies raising quail on top of the compost pile or next to it. They had about 30 quail. I think they were Coturnix quail not sure. is that a good idea like compost chickens except for quails. Also, doing that how large could it scale. if you say added vertical space

    1. I think it could work. A couple of issues I think of would be that domesticated quail have lost the foraging instinct and they don’t free range well. It could certainly be tried and as the quail adapt, then keeping and breeding those that do well could be breed back into them. Regarding the vertical space. When startled quail tend to fly straight up, so the height would have to be such that they could fly up without hit the roof and hurting themselves. Do you have a link or other information on where you saw this? It sounds interesting.
